West Bengal rice farmers see a bright spot in Africa.

Paddy farmers of West Bengal, the country’s largest producer of rice, are exploring African markets to export their produce, following a dip in demand from Bangladesh. We are looking at West and South Africa for exporting our G1 or Swarna Laghu variety of rice from the state. The common rice variety is available in the wholesale market for Rs 25 per kg. The move comes even as rice exports to Bangladesh have dwindled in November, which has brought down prices in domestic market. Prices of rice had shot up over 20 per cent since September when Bangladesh started importing rice after floods affected its crop.
