Govt approves moong procurement at MSP in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu.
The government has approved the procurement of moong sown in 2018-19 (Jul-Jun) kharif season at minimum support price of 6,975 rupees per 100 kg from farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The state governments have sought approval for procurement of green gram (moong) at minimum support price under the price support scheme. The Centre has approved the procurement of 23,000 tn of moong in Karnataka and around 5,000 tn in Tamil Nadu in this kharif marketing season beginning October when arrivals commence in full swing. Higher arrivals and hopes of a bumper crop this year are expected to further weigh on the prices. The move comes in the wake of high domestic supplies due to a bumper pulses, including moong, output in 2017-18 (Jul-Jun) and hopes of higher crop this year as well.

New crop moong enters market, prices 25% below MSP on high moisture.
Arrivals of moong from the current kharif season have started in some parts of Maharashtra. Even at the higher end of the price range, the commodity is being sold at a whopping 25% discount to the minimum support price of 6,975 rupees per 100 kg for 2018-19. In Latur, a key market for pulses in Maharashtra, daily arrivals were at 2,000-2,500 bags (1 bag = 100 kg) in the last week, and it was sold at 4,200-5,200 rupees per 100 kg. Moisture levels in the new crop moong being sold were at 14-23%, compared with 16-18% a year ago. For procurement at minimum support price, the moisture content is fixed at 12%.
Moong drops below MSP even as arrivals begin in north Karnataka.
As the new kharif moong (green gram) hits the markets in North Karnataka, prices of the pulses crop are trading lower at around 5,100 a quintal, much lower than the minimum support price of ?6,975 announced by the Centre. In fact, the prevailing prices in the State are also lower than last year’s support price of 5,575/quintal, growers said, while demanding that the government spell out the procurement strategy for the season and begin purchasing from the markets.

Indias moong acreage was at 2.98 mln ha, up 2.5% on year, led by a rise in the area in Rajasthan. In Rajasthan, the largest grower, the area under the crop jumped 11.9% on year to 1.68 mln ha. Initial rainfall in the state has been good, which has boosted sowing. The state has recorded normal rainfall during Jun 1- Aug 5. However, the acreage was down in some states as farmers have sown more paddy, cotton and soybean.

The area under moong across the country was at 2.745 mln ha as of Wednesday, up 3.7% on year. In Rajasthan, the largest grower of moong, the area under the crop jumped 20.7% on year to 1.586 mln ha. Rainfall in the state has been good so far, with the state recording 16% above normal rainfall during Jun 1-Jul 30. The rise in moong acreage this year is due to the government announcing a steep hike of 50% in the minimum support price for 2018-19.

Acreage under moong across the country was down 1.8% on year at 2.34 mln ha. However, week-on-week the area under the crop has jumped over 33%. This year, sowing of moong was delayed due to the pattern of monsoon rains in Rajasthan, the largest grower of the crop. In Rajasthan, area under moong is up 8.1% on year at 1.3 mln ha so far. Till Jul 11, moong acreage in the state was down over 25% on year.

The area under moong crop across the country was down 5.5% on year at 1.75 mln ha. In Rajasthan, the largest producer of moong, the acreage was down 25.2% on year at 873,100 ha. Sowing under the pulse has been lower this year due to erratic rainfall in key growing areas in the state.
Farmers’ body to auction moong via NCDEX e-markets
Small Farmers’ Agribusiness Consortium offer 495.77 metric tonne of moong for auction through NCDEX e-Markets. The pulse is stocked at Central Warehousing Corp and other godowns in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.

Food Corp of India offer 1,307.1 tonne of moong and 770.4 tonne of urad for auction through NCDEX e-Markets. The pulses to be auctioned are stocked at godowns in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. FCI is selling pulses through NCDEX e-markets to dispose of its huge stock built through procurement from farmers and high imports in 2016-17. (Apr-Mar).
