Farmers in the country had sown rabi urad across 425,700 ha, down 11% on year. At 425,700 ha, area under the crop is also lower than the five-year average of 465,900 ha for the period. Sowing of urad is yet to begin in many states. In Tamil Nadu, one of the major growers of rabi urad, acreage fell 6.8% on year to 176,500 ha. At many places in coastal Tamil Nadu, the pulse is sown in rice fallows. Once rice harvest is complete, area under urad may rise further. Acreage in Andhra Pradesh, one of the largest growers of rabi urad, was also down 23.4% on year at 144,000 ha.
