Mills across Maharashtra produced 9.26 mln tn sugar during Oct 1-Mar 13, up a whopping 122.3% from 4.17 MMT produced a year ago. Production of the sweetener rose sharply this year due to higher availability of cane and improvement in yields. Mills in the state crushed 83.59 mln tn of sugarcane as of Tuesday, way higher than 37.10 mln tn crushed during the same period last year. However, average sugar recovery from cane in Maharashtra, one of the top sugar-producing states, was slightly lower during Oct 1-Mar 13 at 11.08%, compared with 11.23% a year ago.
