With India trying to increase its palm oil plantation footprint in order to minimise its reliance on oilseed imports, the nation teamed up with Malaysia on Tuesday to enlist the latter’s help. After Indonesia, Malaysia, the world’s second largest producer of palm oil, swiftly agreed to share its expertise and technological know-how with India. During a meeting between visiting Malaysian minister Zuraida Kamaruddin and agricultural minister Narendra Singh Tomar at Krishi Bhawan, the two countries agreed on fundamental elements of cooperation in this field, as well as other areas of mutual interest in the farm sector. “India wishes to gain from Malaysia’s extensive expertise. The measure would aid the country’s National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), which intends to increase palm oil production by 6.50 lakh hectares by 2025-26.
