Govt not keen on sugar export subsidy; seeks ways to boost prices.

The government is not keen on providing a subsidy on export of sugar and has asked the industry to suggest other measures to lift prices of the sweetener that have fallen below the cost of production. The government asked us to advise them on what could be done to stem the fall in prices without giving a subsidy. The food ministry held a meeting with various stakeholders on Friday to discuss the issues of the sugar sector. We have asked them (industry and traders) to give other suggestions, but they were only pitching for export subsidy. No measure has been spelt out by them yet.
