Finance ministry is likely to seek the view of the agriculture ministry on whether an increase in import duty on tur to 25% would help farmers as harvest of the pulse is over. The food ministry had proposed last week of hiking import duty on the pulse to 25% from the present 10% to curb a fall in prices. Import duty should be imposed or increased before or during the harvest season in anticipation of a price fall so that farmers are not affected and get fair value for their crop. Govt had imposed a 10% import duty on tur in March, after prices of the second-largest consumed pulse had fallen 20% below MSP. Agriculture ministry estimated India tur output to touch a record 4.23 million tonne in 2016-17 (Jul-Jun), up 65.2% from 2.56 million tonne last year.
