Egypt refined sugar output will increase by 5%.

FAS Cairo forecasts refined sugar production in marketing year (MY) 2018/19 to increase by approximately five percent or 115,000 tonnes to reach 2,44 million tonnes, as compared to the MY 2017/18 estimate of 2,32 mln tonnes. Of this total forecast, 1,34 mln tonnes of sugar will be derived from sugar beet, while 1,1 mln tonnes will be sourced from sugarcane. Increase in production is attributed to higher procurement prices by the government. FAS Cairo forecasts total sugar domestic consumption in MY2018/19 to increase by 1,6 percent or 50,000 MT to reach 3,1 mln tonnes as a result of population increase. Egypt’s raw sugar imports in MY 2018/19 are forecast at 800,000 tonnes against 960,000 tonnes in MY2017/18.
