Chhattisgarh aims over 40% rise in 2018-19 rice crop at 9.5 MMT.

Chhattisgarh government has set a target to produce 9.5 mln tn rice in 2018-19 (Jul-Jun), a rise of over 40% from a year ago, due to hopes of an increase in the yield. Rice production is seen higher this year despite an anticipation of a tad lower acreage under the crop this season as normal monsoon is likely to boost the yield. The India Meteorological Department has forecast a normal southwest monsoon this year for the country at 97% of long period average. Rice planting in the state is aimed at 3.7 mln ha this kharif season, down just 1% from the year-ago period. As the scope to increase acreage is low, thrust will be on crop diversification and increasing productivity.
