Low inventory and a fall in taxes on account of GST, coupled with rising exports, have helped basmati farmers in Punjab and Haryana to command a better price for their produce this season. Even though the area under basmati rice was nearly 10% less as compared to the last kharif season, the yield was better as more farmers decided to sow high-yielding varieties such as 1509 this time around.
