The Intellectual Property Appellate Board is likely to take a decision on Madhya Pradesh’s plea for inclusion in the list of geographical regions suitable for cultivation of basmati. Madhya Pradesh has demanded the inclusion of a few of its districts- Morena, Bhind, Gwalior, Sheopur, Datia, Shivpuri, Guna, Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Hoshangabad, Jabalpur, and Narsingpur–to be registered as regions suitable for cultivation of basmati. The Geographical Indications Registry has given basmati certification to rice grown in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, parts of western Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
